The GBF Foundation for Cooperative Research on South Asian Art and Artists is dedicated to fostering, supporting, publishing, and promoting research within the context of the Museum Rietberg. Its mission includes, but is not limited to, strengthening the Museum’s role as an international center for research on South Asian art, particularly in the field of painting, and advancing global recognition of the museum’s outstanding collections.
A key focus of the Foundation is to support education and professional development for emerging scholars and curators, especially from India and Pakistan, in the discipline of South Asian art history. It also aims to facilitate scholarly research based on original artworks from the Museum Rietberg’s collection.
This public-private partnership is also a tribute to its founders—three internationally acclaimed art historians who have each made significant contributions to the study of Indian art over many decades:
Prof. B. N. Goswamy (India),
Prof. Milo Cleveland Beach (USA), and
Dr. Eberhard Fischer (Switzerland, former Director of the Museum Rietberg).
The Foundation’s name GBF is derived from the initials of these distinguished scholars.
